How Jordan Cruickshank Fuelled the Edinburgh Marathon Festival 10K & 5K Double
Jordan Cruickshank recently took on the Edinburgh Marathon Festival 10K and 5K double.
Over the last few years, Jordan has refined a fuelling strategy that focuses on staying topped up with carbohydrates right up until the start line while avoiding digestive issues.
The Fuel Plan
Before Racing
Around two hours before racing, Jordan consumed:
- Nomio performance shot
- Three cereal bars
- 500ml of BareFuel (~50g carbs)
Then, ten minutes before the start, he had a Precision Hydration caffeine gel.
Between the 10K and 5K
Between races, Jordan drank:
- 750ml of water with BareFuel Unflavoured
Recovery
After completing both races, Jordan had:
- 750ml of water with BareFuel Unflavoured
- Chicken burger and chips (athlete)
In total, Jordan estimates he consumed approximately 300g of carbohydrates throughout the day.
Lessons Learned
One of Jordan’s biggest takeaways from the day was the importance of planning recovery nutrition.
The high-carbohydrate, predominantly liquid approach worked well before and during racing.
However, Jordan feels that having more substantial recovery food prepared in advance would likely have improved post-race recovery further.
Why This Strategy Works
For Jordan, stopping solid food around two hours before racing has helped eliminate digestive issues while still allowing him to begin races feeling fuelled.
By continuing to take on carbohydrates through drink mix and gels, he can maintain carbohydrate intake without eating close to the start.
It’s a strategy he has refined over several years of racing.
